Cytokines are a category of signaling proteins and glycoproteins that, like hormones and neurotransmitters, are used extensively in cellular communication. They are critical to the functioning of both innate and adaptive immune responses. Cytokines are often secreted by immune cells which have encountered a pathogen as a way to activate and recruit more immune cells to increase the system's response to the pathogen.
