Nociceptors protectively relay information about damage or trauma from the body to the central nervous system, where it is interpreted by the brain as pain. However, persistent activation of nociceptive transmission may induce a wind-up phenomenon and cause pathological changes that lower the threshold for transmitting pain signals. This process is difficult to stop once established by a chronic pain condition.
